Pet Loss & Companion Animal Grief

The loss of a beloved pet can be one of the most painful and deeply personal forms of grief. Companion animals are often family members, sources of unconditional love, and steady sources of comfort in our lives. When they die or are nearing the end of life, the grief can feel overwhelming and, at times, misunderstood by others.

Pet loss counseling offers a supportive and compassionate space to process this unique kind of grief. Whether you are coping with the recent loss of a pet, anticipating an upcoming goodbye, or struggling with difficult decisions such as euthanasia, therapy can help you navigate the complex emotions that often accompany these experiences—including sadness, guilt, anger, or loneliness.

At The Next Chapter Counseling Services, we honor the deep bond between people and their animals. Together, we create space to remember, process your grief at your own pace, and find ways to carry the love and connection you shared forward while moving toward healing.

Trauma & EMDR Therapy

Traumatic or distressing experiences can leave lasting impacts on how we think, feel, and move through the world. You may notice intrusive memories, heightened anxiety, difficulty trusting others, or feeling “stuck” in patterns that developed as ways to cope. Trauma therapy offers a supportive space to gently process these experiences and move toward healing.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process and integrate difficult memories so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity. EMDR can be effective for a range of concerns, including trauma, anxiety, grief, and experiences that continue to feel unresolved.

At The Next Chapter Counseling Services, trauma work is approached with care, collaboration, and respect for your pace. Together, we will focus on building safety and stability while working to process difficult experiences, strengthen resilience, and support meaningful healing and growth.

First Responder Support

First responders carry immense responsibility in their work—often witnessing situations and experiences that most people never encounter. The demands of the job can take a toll over time, affecting stress levels, relationships, sleep, and overall well-being. Many first responders also find it difficult to talk openly about these experiences, especially in environments where strength and composure are expected.

First responder counseling provides a confidential and supportive space to process the unique challenges of this work. Whether you are navigating cumulative stress, trauma exposure, burnout, or the transition between work and home life, therapy can help you develop tools to manage stress, process difficult experiences, and strengthen resilience.

At The Next Chapter Counseling Services, we approach this work with deep respect for the dedication and service that first responders bring to their communities. Using evidence-based approaches, including EMDR, we can work together to process difficult experiences, reduce distress, and support your long-term well-being—both on and off the job.

Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy

Neurodivergent individuals—including those who identify with ADHD, autism, sensory differences, or other variations in how the brain processes information—often navigate a world that was not designed with their needs in mind. Many people come to therapy after years of feeling misunderstood, pressured to mask their authentic selves, or struggling with burnout, anxiety, or self-doubt.

Neurodivergent-affirming therapy recognizes that these differences are not problems to be “fixed,” but natural variations in how people think, learn, and experience the world. In therapy, we focus on understanding your unique strengths, challenges, and needs while creating strategies that support your well-being in ways that feel sustainable and authentic.

At The Next Chapter Counseling Services, we offer a compassionate and collaborative space where neurodivergent adults can explore their experiences without judgment. Together, we can work to reduce overwhelm, process past experiences, build supportive coping strategies, and cultivate greater self-understanding and self-acceptance.

Couples Counseling

Relationships can be one of the most meaningful parts of our lives, but they can also face challenges over time. Stress, communication difficulties, life transitions, unresolved conflict, or feelings of disconnection can leave partners feeling stuck or misunderstood. Couples counseling offers a supportive space to slow down, listen more deeply, and work toward a stronger and more connected relationship.

At The Next Chapter Counseling Services, couples counseling focuses on helping partners improve communication, better understand one another’s needs, and navigate challenges together. Whether you are working through conflict, rebuilding trust, adjusting to life changes, or simply wanting to strengthen your relationship, therapy can help you develop healthier patterns of connection.

Our approach is collaborative and compassionate, creating space for both partners to feel heard and respected. Together, we work toward building greater understanding, strengthening emotional connection, and helping your relationship move forward in a way that feels more supportive and fulfilling for both of you.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy approach that helps people heal from difficult or overwhelming experiences. When something distressing happens, the brain can sometimes store the memory in a way that keeps it feeling very present—long after the event has passed. This can show up as strong emotional reactions, intrusive memories, anxiety, or feeling “stuck” in patterns that are hard to change.

EMDR helps the brain process these experiences so they no longer carry the same level of distress. During EMDR, you briefly focus on a memory or experience while also engaging in gentle back-and-forth stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping. This process supports the brain’s natural ability to heal and reorganize difficult memories.

Many clients find that, over time, the memory becomes less overwhelming. The experience is still remembered, but it begins to feel more like something that happened in the past rather than something that is still happening in the present. EMDR can help reduce distress, shift negative beliefs, and create space for greater calm, clarity, and resilience.

"The hardest challenge is to be yourself in a world where everyone is trying to make you be somebody else.
